What we love about Chamonix

Each year, millions of visitors and holiday-goers make the trip to admire the roof of Western Europe.

Mont Blanc, with its 4,810-metre altitude, is one of the most visited natural sites in the world. Plenty of high-mountaineering enthusiasts meet in the streets of cosmopolitan Chamonix.

Here, there is so much to see and do. Take, for instance, the Mer de Glace (the largest snow glacier in France) accessed by a rack-and-pinion railway; the Aiguille du Midi and its cable car route that starts in the centre of Chamonix; the lakes and waterfalls of the Mont Blanc massif that can be discovered through hiking; or even the Vallee Blanche, perfect for glacier trekking.

A small river runs through a picturesque alpine town with snow-capped mountains in the background. The town features buildings with balconies and a mix of trees and greenery.

A destination to experience in all seasons

In Chamonix, skiing and an array of other great outdoor activities appeal to a large audience.

The proximity of the ski areas of Les Houches, Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc, and Contamines allows for both intensive and varied snow sports with great detail.

The Valley, on the other hand, is a vast playground for skiers and high-mountain enthusiasts. Snowshoeing, tobogganing, trail running, ski-joëring, dog sledging, mountaineering, scenic flights, canyoning, paragliding, mountain biking, golf, or even climbing on frozen waterfalls make the four seasons of Chamonix intense in discovery and emotion.

Chamonix is a well-travelled destination

More than 2.5 million visitors come on holiday to ski, mountaineer, hike, or simply enjoy this unique landscape and the great view in France each year. The station area and town have a capacity of over 80,000 beds in chalet accommodation across the resort.

The highest level of high

In 2017, a team of surveyors reassessed the altitude of Mont-Blanc upwards. With its height of 4,810 metres, it is not at risk of losing its honorary title of 'The Roof of Western Europe'.

Do not miss

The little Montenvers cog train will take you to the "Refuge du Montenvers", at the foot of the Mer de Glace in the French Alps. Here, we suggest enjoying a creamy polenta during the day or night!

A legendary hike

The Mont Blanc Massif, a mountain range that reflects in Lac Blanc, is the ultimate reason for its international fame. Plan and gear up with good walking shoes to admire this view, a must-do activity during your holiday.
