Because the main island of the Balearic Islands has everything you would expect from a seaside destination with character: endless beaches, turquoise waters, small wild coves, picture-postcard villages, towns of art and history with architectural gems, lively fishing ports, exceptional natural areas and sites, delicious local cuisine and many other pleasant surprises awaiting visitors, its easy access by plane or ferry from Barcelona helps to make the island attractive to European tourists.
It is the largest island in the Spanish Balearic archipelago, which has five main islands, four of which are inhabited (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera).
Located in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Barcelona and Valencia, it has more than 900,000 inhabitants, half of whom live in Palma, it's capital.
Mallorca and Menorca are derived from Latin and mean "big island" for the former and "small island" for the latter.
Palma, Calvià, Inca, Manacor, Sóller and Pollença are the main towns on Mallorca. Among the most famous resorts and beaches are Magaluf, El Arenal, Colonia de Sant Jordi, the ports of Sóller and Pollença and the beaches of Muro, Santanyi, Cala Blava and Cabo Blanca.
The island's main mountain range is located in the West, in the Serra Tramuntana province. These exceptional natural landscapes earned the island a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2011.
