Austin in October

ACL, Formula 1 and Fall in the City

October gives Austin a new energy

The worst of the summer heat begins to ease, the patios the city's known for fill up again, and mornings welcome a walk or coffee outside. It is one of the busiest months on the city's calendar: Austin City Limits Music Festival fills Zilker Park for two weekends, and the United States Grand Prix brings Formula 1 to Circuit of The Americas later in the month.

There is plenty to do between those events, too. Take a swim at Barton Springs, hear a band in one of Austin's many smaller live music venues, or drive west for a Hill Country wine tasting. The best October trip leaves time for both the big events and the places Austinites return to year-round.

Austin City Limits takes over Zilker Park

Austin City Limits Music Festival (ACL) returns to Zilker Park on October 2–4 and October 9–11, 2026. Named for the long-running PBS music program, ACL brings more than 100 performances to nine stages. You can build a day around your favourite headliners, but leave a gap in the schedule to follow a sound you hear across the lawn. Finding a new act on a smaller stage is part of the fun.

Zilker Park is a memorable festival setting. The downtown skyline makes for a gorgeous view beyond the park, and the local food vendors offer the best of Austin's taco and barbecue scene, making the annual event uniquely "Austin." Pace yourself in the afternoon Texas sun, carry water, and check the festival map before you commit to back-to-back sets on opposite sides of the park.

Plan the trip to the park as carefully as the music. Festival traffic runs through the city, and nearby parking is limited. ACL runs a shuttle from Sand Beach Park downtown to the Barton Springs West entrance; walking or biking can also make sense if you are staying centrally. Check the festival's website before you go.

Outside the festival grounds

The area around Zilker deserves its own morning. Barton Springs Pool is a city icon, a spring-fed, natural pool to cool off, even when the October air feels more comfortable than the sweltering summer heat. A morning swim before the festival is a great way to see the neighbourhood. Check pool hours before heading out, then allow time to walk the trails or relax under the trees afterwards to experience Austin like a true local.

For a nearby meal, Barton Springs Road has new and old Austin stops, including the original Chuy’s for classic Tex-Mex and the relatively new restaurant Oria, which serves wonderful Mediterranean cuisine in a stylish dining room. South Lamar offers another cluster of restaurants and bars a short ride away. Our favourites include Asian-fusion barbecue spot Loro, with a sprawling patio and casual atmosphere, and Gibson Street Bar, already decked out in Halloween decor. If you plan to leave ACL and return later, check the festival's current re-entry policy first; otherwise, save that neighbourhood dinner for a day when you are not using your wristband.

Then Formula 1 arrives

The Formula 1 United States Grand Prix runs October 23–25, 2026, at Circuit of The Americas, southeast of downtown Austin. COTA also lists a Grand Prix View experience on Thursday, October 22, so check which dates your ticket covers. The main race is Sunday, but a full weekend gives you time to watch practice and qualifying and explore the grounds without trying to fit everything into race day.

COTA's steep climb toward Turn 1 is one of the circuit's defining sights. From a viewing spot on the grounds, you can get a sense of the elevation changes that television does not always capture. Between sessions, there are food and fan areas and concerts: Maroon 5 is scheduled for Friday, Post Malone for Saturday, and Alesso for a post-race performance Sunday. Concert access and viewing areas depend on the ticket, so check the event details when planning your day.

Getting to the circuit takes some thought. It is well outside the central neighbourhoods where many visitors stay, so plan accordingly. Choose your parking, shuttle or rideshare plan in advance, and leave room after the final session to get back into central Austin.

Make time for the city

An event ticket can easily fill the itinerary, but Austin's everyday routines are part of the trip. Walk a section of the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail beside Lady Bird Lake in the morning. Cross the pedestrian bridge for a view toward downtown, then head to Barton Springs for a swim or to South Congress to browse shops and stop for lunch. Those are easier outings to enjoy on a day away from the festival or track.

Leave an evening open for live music outside the major events. The Red River Cultural District has several small venues close together, including Mohawk, while ACL Live at the Moody Theater hosts larger shows downtown.

October tastes like Austin

Food is a good way to give an event weekend some breathing room. Make time for barbecue at one of our favourite spots like Micklethwait Barbecue or woman-owned La Barbecue rather than treating it as something to grab between commitments; Austin famously has long lines for barbecue at the best spots. On South Congress, you can pair dinner with a walk past the neighbourhood's shops and music spots; on South Lamar, you can build an evening around a restaurant and a nearby bar.

East Austin suits a faster pace of moving between dinner and drinks, with strips like East Sixth that have numerous bars and restaurants. If good dining is central to your plans, book ahead during ACL and Grand Prix weekends.

Take a day into the Hill Country

If you have a full day, follow Highway 290 west toward Fredericksburg and stop at William Chris Vineyards. The winery is in Hye, outside Fredericksburg, so it fits naturally into a drive through Texas wine country. It is a strong choice for visitors who want to taste the best wines made from Texas-grown grapes and learn something about the region rather than simply collect another tasting room stop.

William Chris offers guided tastings with views of its estate vineyard, as well as more involved wine and food experiences. It was ranked No. 31 on the 2025 World's Best Vineyards list, the first Texas winery to make that top 50. Book ahead for a weekend visit, then continue to Fredericksburg for lunch and a walk along Main Street if you want to make a day of it. Arrange a driver if your group plans to taste wine, and leave enough time for the hour-plus drive back to Austin.

The best month to see Austin?

It depends on the trip you want. The first two weekends are ACL, the Grand Prix brings a different crowd later in the month, and the days in between give you more room to explore at your own pace. October's milder mornings make it easier to combine outdoor time with a restaurant or show at night.

Come for a headliner or the race if that is what draws you here. Then give Austin a little unscheduled time: a swim, an unexpected band, a long meal or a drive into the hills may be what you remember most.
