Golden Hour with Emerald Stay: Après-Ski from the French Alps to Verbier

Skis come off, boots stay on, and tables slowly begin to fill. Jackets stay half-zipped against the cold, music drifts across the snow, and the afternoon gradually eases into evening.

If the golden hour by the sea is about vermut and wine, in the mountains, it begins a little differently. The last run ends, the light softens on the peaks, and someone says, “let’s get a drink.”

In the Alps, this is the moment when the pace of the day changes. The slopes empty out, conversations stretch a little longer, and nobody seems in a hurry to leave.

The French Alps: Sun, Music, and Something Warm

After the last runs across the French Alps, people move from the slopes to the terraces. Everyone gathers around with music in the background and the sound of boots against wooden floors filling the terraces.

The first drink depends on your mood. With cold hands and warm cheeks, vin chaud is the natural choice: hot red wine with cinnamon, star anise, cloves, and orange, served in small mugs at most slope-side bars. If the terrace is buzzing and the sun is still out, an Aperol Spritz feels just as right, cold and slightly bitter, usually served over ice with a slice of orange.

After that, the afternoon finds its rhythm. Occasionally it stays light, just drinks, music, and good conversation. Other times, someone might order a few simple plates, to pass around the table as the afternoon wanes.

In places like Val d'Isère or Méribel, things get lively fast. Music spills across the terraces, live DJs take over, and places like La Folie Douce have made it part of the daily rhythm. Elsewhere, it’s quieter. Just a terrace, a simple menu, and the day slowly fading as the light goes pink over the snow.

And the good news? You don't need a mountain terrace to capture that feeling; you just need the right recipe. Here's one of our favourite combinations to bring a little après-ski warmth home with you.

How to bring a French Alps après-ski to your table

What you'll need (serves 3–4):

  • Red wine, cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, and orange slices

  • Aperol, Prosecco, soda water and ice A local beer or a bottle of wine

  • Bread, cheese (Comté, Beaufort, Reblochon), charcuterie (saucisson, jambon cru)

Preparation

Warm the wine gently with spices and orange, without letting it boil. For something cooler, mix an Aperol Spritz with three parts Prosecco, two parts Aperol, and one part soda, finished with a slice of orange. Slice the bread, set out the cheese and charcuterie on the table, and keep everything within reach.

No need to arrange it carefully. Invite friends, pour a drink, and create your own golden hour at home.

Verbier: Evenings with a View

In Verbier, après-ski feels a bit different. The light stays over the valley a little longer, terraces open onto wide views, and the evening comes in slowly. It usually starts near the lifts, around Médran, where people stop for a drink on their way back.

A glass of Fendant often comes first, the local white from the Valais, dry and easy to drink. It’s the kind of wine you order without thinking and finish just as quickly.

If the sun is still out, Hugo Spritz appears on most tables. Made with elderflower syrup, Prosecco, soda, mint, and lime, it’s a lighter option that works well in the afternoon.

As the light fades, things shift a little. Another round is ordered, and people stay longer than planned. What starts as a drink often continues into the evening without much of a plan.

Around Verbier, it takes different forms. Le Rouge, open throughout the winter season, draws people in for its terrace and music, while Le Farinet is lively from late afternoon onwards, known for its live music and different bands throughout the season.

Whether on a terrace or back at your chalet, it’s easy to recreate the same moment.

What you'll need (serves 2–4):

  • A bottle of Fendant or Dôle

  • Elderflower syrup, Prosecco, soda water, fresh mint, limes and ice

  • Bread Viande séchée or cured meats

  • Pickles and pickled onions

  • Fondue mix (optional)

Preparation

Start with a Hugo Spritz if the sun is still out: pour 150 ml of Prosecco over ice, add 20 ml of elderflower syrup, a splash of soda water, a few fresh mint leaves, and a slice of lime. Once you sit down, switch to a glass of Fendant. Set out the bread, meats, and cornichons on the table, ready to share. There’s no set order; everything stays on the table.

A Shared Way to Experience the Mountains

Two Alps destinations, two rhythms. In the French Alps, a vin chaud with cold hands and an Aperol Spritz in the sun. In Verbier, a Fendant in the afternoon light and a Hugo Spritz on the terrace.

But the intention is the same: to gather and ease into the evening.

Because in the end, what stays with you is not the drink itself, but the warmth of it, the setting, and the people around you, long after the day on the mountain is over.
