When choosing a sunny holiday spot in Spain, two standouts often come up: Mallorca and the Costa del Sol. Both offer beautiful coastal experiences, sun-filled days, and plenty of things to do. But in the battle for the ultimate getaway, we have one winner in our hearts: Mallorca. Learn why we believe Mallorca outshines the Costa del Sol below.

Reasons to Visit the Costa del Sol

We'll be honest, the Costa del Sol is popular for a reason. Located in southern Spain, it offers gorgeous beaches, a thriving golf scene, and a warm climate. If you're looking for great weather, it delivers year-round sunshine. Famous beach towns like Malaga and Marbella offer a fantastic mix of high-end amenities and laid-back coastal charm. And let's not forget the food. Delicious seafood, tapas, and all the Mediterranean delights you could ask for. The region is also known for its incredible culture, golf courses and vibrant nightlife. Andalusia as a whole is full of cultural richness and exciting things to discover, extending far inland, but in the summer, the region's extreme heat is hard to bear.

And here's the catch: the Costa del Sol can sometimes feel predictable. The larger towns and resorts can become crowded, especially in the summer, with tourists flocking to the same old spots in droves. Yes, the area is hard to beat as a vacation destination, but you might find yourself vying for a beach sunbed or standing in long queues for popular attractions.

Here's why we think Mallorca is a cut above

First, let's talk diversity. Mallorca isn't just about the beach. It has it all, from the dramatic cliffs of Cap de Formentor to the charming mountain villages of the Tramuntana range. It's a place where you can start your morning with a mountain hike or cycle, grab lunch in a quaint town, and end the day watching the sunset by the sea. Mallorca offers a balance of outdoor adventure, relaxation, and cultural exploration.

The island's beaches are undeniably stunning, and they don't feel completely overrun. And whilst many beaches do get busy in peak season, there are plenty of remote places to get away from it all, such as Cala Carbo near Pollensa, and S'illot beach in Alcudia. So, whether you're visiting the soft sand of Platja de Muro or the different beaches of Cala Sant Vicenç, you're likely to find more opportunities for privacy and tranquillity than in the busy Costa del Sol resorts. The beaches are less commercialised, offering an authentic feel that the Costa del Sol sometimes lacks.

Now, let's talk about food. Mallorca is a culinary haven, with its dishes like Mallorcan tumbet, delicious sobrassada, and the famous pastry ensaimada taking centre stage. The island is also home to a range of restaurants like Los Patos or La Trencadora, that combine traditional Mediterranean flavours with contemporary innovation. From charming village taverns to Michelin-starred dining, Mallorca has a food scene that's hard to beat.

Looking for culture? Mallorca's got that covered too. Its history and art can be explored in its museums, galleries, and historical sites. Stroll through Pollença's old town, explore the medieval walls of Alcudia, climb up the Puig de Maria or the 365 Calvari steps (one for each day of the year), or visit the mountain monasteries that dot the island. There's a richness to Mallorca that goes beyond the typical beach holiday.

And for those who enjoy a more laid-back vibe, Mallorca has some hidden gems that offer a slower pace compared to some of the high-energy resorts of Costa del Sol. In contrast, the larger cities of the Costa del Sol can feel a bit hectic, with their bustling streets and packed resorts.

Last but not least: The golf alternative to the Costa del Sol

Besides the perks above, Mallorca is also a golfer's paradise. Year-round sunshine, diverse terrain, and renowned golf resorts make the island the ideal escape for enthusiasts of all levels. If you genuinely love golf or are just a fan of jaw-dropping views, we would be remiss not to mention the golf club Alcanada in Alcudia. Architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed this stunning course overlooking the sea and the iconic Alcanada lighthouse. His thoughtful placement of bunkers, trees and other obstacles throughout the course will put even experienced golfers to the test.

So, Why Mallorca Wins:

The truth is, Mallorca offers everything you could ask for in a holiday: incredible natural beauty, cultural richness, authentic experiences, and, importantly, a sense of discovery. The Costa del Sol is also great if you're into culture, beaches, golf, and sun, but in our opinion, Mallorca is the winner if you want a destination that offers more variety and adventure.

So, next time you're planning your trip to Spain, think beyond the usual. Mallorca isn't just another beach destination. It's a multi-dimensional experience waiting to be explored. When you're ready to leave the crowds behind and find something truly special, Mallorca will be waiting.
