Planning a ski holiday in the French Alps often starts with the same question: where should we go? With so many destinations to choose from, the answer isn't always as simple as it may seem. Every year, thousands of people book trips to the Alps but may choose a resort that doesn't meet all their needs. The right choice for a couple celebrating an anniversary could be different from that for friends looking for après-ski, or a family travelling with young children.

Instead of ranking resorts based on snow stats or vertical drop, we matched them to real scenarios: different skill levels, non-skiers, après-ski lovers, couples, and families.

A Ski Trip for Every Level: Where to Ski Based on Your Skills

Choosing where to ski is often about how you want to feel on the mountain. You might be getting comfortable on your first runs, building confidence, or looking for terrain that pushes you further.

For beginners – Alpe d'Huez

Alpe d'Huez is particularly well suited to those at the start of their skiing journey, with around 36 green and 29 blue runs located close to the village. This makes it easier to practise without having to navigate more advanced terrain.

Beginner areas like Les Bergers and Les Jeux 2100 offer wide, gentle slopes designed for building confidence, along with dedicated lifts and low-speed zones. Runs like Chardons and Violettes are an easier and more comfortable introduction before progressing to longer blue pistes such as Villard.

For intermediate skiers – Méribel (Les 3 Vallées)

Méribel is for those who are already comfortable on skis and ready to explore further. Its central location within Les 3 Vallées provides access to a variety of blue and red runs, especially on the Méribel Mottaret side. Long, well-connected pistes that help build confidence.

Blue runs such as Bouvreuil offer smooth, consistent terrain, while nearby red runs like Fouine are there when you're ready to take the next step.

For advanced skiers – Chamonix & Val d'Isère

Chamonix and Val d'Isère offer more technical terrain and a different kind of challenge for more experienced skiers.

Chamonix is all about high-mountain and off-piste skiing, with routes such as the Vallée Blanche, accessed from the Aiguille du Midi, offering a more technical and immersive experience for advanced skiers, typically explored with a guide.

Val d'Isère combines technical pistes with a strong competitive heritage. For those looking to test their limits, runs such as the Face de Bellevarde, used for Alpine Ski World Cup races, offer a steep, technical descent.

For the Non-Skiers in the Group: What to do in the Alps besides skiing

Not everyone comes to the Alps to ski, and the right destination ensures they don't feel left out. Some days are better spent taking a step back and enjoying the setting in a different way. In destinations like Chamonix, Megève, and Courchevel, there is more to the experience than just the slopes, with lively village centres, restaurants, boutique shopping, wellness spaces, and more.

For those who may still want to be out in the mountains, there is snowshoeing, dog sledging, the Aiguille du Midi, or winter walks through scenic forest trails with views over Mont Blanc.
